Chandigarh, May 30
The city unit of the Congress today passed a resolution requesting Rahul Gandhi not to resign from the party president’s post. The resolution was passed in the presence of Pawan Kumar Bansal, former Union Minister.
While moving the resolution, Pardeep Chhabra, president, Chandigarh Congress, said, “It is in the interest of the nation and the Congress that Rahul Gandhi should remain party president and lead from the front.”
Chhabra also announced that no party spokesman would participate in TV debates for next one month.
Demand for revamp of Chandigarh Congress
The cracks within the Congress once again came to the fore when some members raised the demand for revamping the Chandigarh Congress in the meeting held today.
Though Pardeep Chhabra, president of Chandigarh Congress, called the meeting to pass a resolution requesting Rahul Gandhi not to resign from the party chief’s post, certain senior members used the platform to raise the issue of revamping the Chandigarh Congress.
Bansal was also present on the occasion, but many members of the Chandigarh Territorial Congress Committee (CTCC) members, including Subhash Chawla, did not attend the meeting.
Pawan Kumar Sharma, member of the All India Congress Committee (AICC), demanded immediate meeting of the Chandigarh Congress for introspection of the reasons behind party’s defeat in the Lok Sabha elections.
“Passing one line resolution in favour of Rahul is not enough. All members should go to Delhi like the Haryana and Punjab Congress and request Rahul Gandhi not to resign,” he said. Another CTCC member HS Lucky also supported demand for revamping the Congress. While the group opposing party president Chhabra had been raising demand for holding immediate meeting for introspection, the latter said he would call workers meeting at an appropriate time.
Due to preoccupation with other work some CTCC members did not attend the meeting, said Chhabra.
