The court of the Additional District and Sessions Judge has reserved its order on the quantum of punishment in the Akansh Sen murder case for tomorrow.

Harmehtab Singh, alias Farid, grandson of Gian Singh Rarewala, a former Chief Minister of the erstwhile Pepsu state, was yesterday held guilty by the court in the murder case of Akansh Sen (28), a relative of former Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh.

During the arguments on the quantum of the punishment, the prosecution demanded the maximum punishment, which could be the capital punishment or life imprisonment till death, along with a heavy fine, for Harmehtab, who was convicted under Sections 302 and 34 of the IPC.

However, the defence counsel prayed for a lenient view as the convict was not driving the offending vehicle and the crime was not committed intentionally. Also, the case did not fall in the rarest of the rare category and the crime was neither committed against society nor for property, argued the defence counsel.

According to the prosecution, Sen was allegedly run over by a BMW car following a brawl in Sector 9 on February 9, 2017. Balraj Singh Randhawa was driving the car, while Harmehtab instigated him to do so. Harmehtab was arrested on February 16, 2017, whereas Randhawa was declared a proclaimed offender and is still at large.
