Funds for PGIMER up Rs 51.53 crore

Chandigarh, February 1

The PGIMER has been allocated Rs 1551.53 crore in the Budget 2020-21 against Rs 2,150 crore it had demanded.

Last year, the PGI had got Rs 1,500 crore. Later, it was provided additional funds of Rs 260 crore.

The premier institute had demanded Rs 700 crore under capital generation. However, it has got only 325 crore. Among the major projects, the PGI is in the process of constructing high-end 430-bed mother and child care centre, 300-bed neurosciences centre and 300-bed hospital at the satellite centre in Sangrur. The PGI has also estimated to generate Rs 160 crores next fiscal year.

“I am quite satisfied with the funds we have received this year, even though a huge chunk of it will be invested on salaries of the staff while the rest will be spent on equipment etc. Even last year, we had demanded Rs 1,760 crore, but got Rs 1,500 crore. However, in the second phase, we were given Rs 260 crore,” said PGI Director Prof Jagat Ram. “Likewise, we had sought Rs 2,100 crore this year, but only Rs 1,551 crore has been allocated to us. We are hoping that the government keeps its promise and gives fund between Rs 250 crore and Rs 300 crore in second phase,” he said. — TNS
