Harman Sandhu (15) scored 97.6 per cent marks in the ICSE Class X examinations and emerged as the topper in the tricity. The results were declared on Monday.
Last year, Shreya Chauhan of Saupin’s School, Panchkula, had topped the tricity by scoring 98 per cent marks.
Sandhu did not take any tuition and relied on self-study. “In the run-up to the exams, for around months, I was studying for about 10 hours daily,” she said.
She used to watch “Tarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashma” on TV to beat the stress. She doesn’t have any social media accounts. “I don’t like it (Facebook, Twitter),” she said.
She scored 100 in social studies and 98 each in computer science, mathematics and Hindi. She has been the topper in her class right from Class VI onwards.
Speedcubing master, Real Madrid fan secures 2nd rank in tricity
Adavya Bhutani (15) of St Stephen’s School, Chandigarh, bagged the second position in the tricity with 97.4 per cent marks.
He also didn’t take any tuition and relied on self-study. “I didn’t follow any strict study schedule. However, I was regular,” he said.
Scoring 100 each in mathematics, computer science and social studies, Bhutani wants to pursue engineering in computer science.
He is pursuing the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme at Strawberry Fields High School and after that he would go abroad for engineering. His elder brother is also pursuing computer science abroad.
Speedcubing is a passion for Bhutani where you solve puzzles. “It is my passion. I had even formed a club in my school where I used to teach it to other students. I used to beat my stress with speedcubing,” he said.
Bhutani is a die-hard fan of Real Madrid. “I didn’t miss even a single match of theirs,” he said.
He gives credit to his family and school for the result.
Bhutani’s parents are doctors. His father, Dr Vikas Bhutani, is in internal medicine at Fortis Hospital, Mohali, while his mother, Dr Anjali Bhutani, is in lab medicine at Max Hospital, Mohali.

Muskan Lohchab (15), a student of Little Flower Convent School, Panchkula, secured the third position in tricity with 97 per cent marks.
Muskan has bagged the top position in Panchkula district. She didn’t take any tuition and relied on self-study.
A resident of Sector 27-B, Chandigarh, she will opt for the medical stream and wants to become a doctor. “It is a noble profession,” she said. Her father, Gobinder Lohchab, is a public prosecutor at the Panchkula District Courts, while her mother, Suman, is a housewife. She said her father wanted her to become a doctor and help people. The family hails from Rohtak, Haryana.
Muskan has no presence in the social media such as Facebook and Instagram, but occasionally uses her parents’ phones for WhatsApp.
Her stress buster is painting and watching football on television. “I am a big fan of Shah Rukh Khan movies,” she said.
Daughter of doctor couple, she wants to become an engineer
Harman’s parents, Dr SS Sandhu and Dr Ritu Sandhu, run a clinic at Kansal in Mohali. A student of St Xavier’s Senior Secondary School, Sector 44, Sandhu wants to pursue engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT). “I am opting for the non-medical stream. I am not strong enough to see wounds and injuries. My grandfather, LS Sandhu, retired as a Superintending Engineer from the Punjab Electricity Board. He used to solve my mathematics problems. He has been my inspiration,” she said. She gave credit to her teachers, parents and grandfather for her success.
