Mohali, October 7

The Crime Investigation Agency (CIA) of the Mohali police claims to have solved a blind murder case of a woman after one of the five persons arrested for thefts reportedly confessed to the crime.

Those arrested were identified as Shiv Chopra, a resident of Old Sunny Enclave, Kharar, Vijay Kumar, a resident of Teur village, Mustakeem Ali and Salma Khan, both residents of Ward No. 5, Kharar, and Karanbir Singh, alias Karan, a resident of Kheri village in Muktsar district. The police recovered nine gold chains, a pistol, three live cartridges, two toy pistols, two bikes and a scooter from them.

Divulging details, SSP Navjot Singh Mahal said the police had received a tip-off that Shiv Chopra, Vijay Kumar, Mustakeem Ali and Salma Khan were involved in thefts in the Kharar area. They were arrested in a case registered under Section 382, 392 and 120-B of the IPC and Section 25 of the Arms Act at the Kharar (city) police station on October 2.

SSP Mahal said during interrogation, Shiv Chopra revealed that he had murdered a woman, Kamaljeet Kaur, at Old Mata Gujri Enclave, Kharar, over three months ago. Shiv Chopra confessed to have strangled her with a muffler and carried out a theft at her house. The suspect had fled after setting her body ablaze. Shiv Chopra also revealed that he had stayed at her house as a tenant, the SSP added. A case under Section 302 was registered in this connection at the Kharar (city) police station on June 30 this year. Mahal said Shiv Chopra revealed that he, along with his accomplices, had snatched nine gold chains and a mobile phone and committed a robbery at a grocery shop. The suspects had committed the crimes in Mata Gujri Enclave, Sunny Enclave, the Gillco Valley market and on the Jandpur road in Kharar. Investigation was on to get information about their involvement in other cases, he added.
