A rehri-puller was crushed to death under a road roller in Phase 10 here late last night. The victim has been identified as Sandeep (24), a resident of Sector 56, Chandigarh.

The incident took place when road recarpeting work was under way around midnight in front of a liquor shop at Phase 10. Sandeep was not able to see the road roller, which was moving backwards, as it was dark.

The rehri, which was illegally fitted with a scooter engine and was moving at a fast pace, hit the road roller. Sandeep fell down and was crushed under the rear wheel of the roller. He died on the spot.

The victim’s friend, Sonu Kumar, who was passing by, saw the victim’s body lying on the road and informed the police.

Even after the incident, the driver reportedly kept running the road roller for about 35 minutes. Later, the driver, on seeing policemen arrive at the spot, fled from there. He was arrested a few hours later. He has been identified as Gautam Kumar, a resident of Rasankheri village near Kharar. A case has been registered on a complaint of Sonu against the road roller driver under Sections 279 (rash driving or riding on a public way) and 304 A (causing death by negligence) of the IPC at the Phase 11 police station.
