The authorities of the Amritsar Central Jail confiscated five cellphones from a sand-laden tractor-trolley, which was taken inside the jail premises. It was taken towards the gurdwara where construction work was going on.

The authorities also recovered 25-gm opium, a headphone and a charger from the tractor-trolley.

The police have booked two persons, including the driver of the tractor-trolley, in this regard. The suspects have been identified as driver Jaswant Singh of Gaggomahal village and Gurjit Singh of Harar Khurd village, who was lodged in the jail.

A case under Sections 18, 61 and 85 of the NDPS Act and Sections 42 and 52-A of the Prisoners Act has been registered against them.

Jaswant was arrested from the spot and he was handed over to the police.

Shamsher Singh, Assistant Superintendent, Central Jail, said they received a specific input that Jaswant was sneaking a prohibited material into the jail.

“On Saturday as the suspect was about to unload the sand from the tractor-trolley, the jail staff checked the trolley and recovered five cellphones, a charger, a headphone and 25-gm opium,” he added.

According to a preliminary probe, Jaswant said he brought the cellphones and other items on the directions of Gurjit.
