The Department of Botanical and Environmental Sciences of Guru Nanak Dev University organised an academic lecture on ‘Oxidative/ Nitrosative Stresses and Heart Failure’ here on Monday.

Prof Pawan K Singhal from the Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences, University of Manitoba, delivered the lecture. Noted film actor, director and story writer Deepa Sahi was the guest of honour on the occasion.

Prof Singhal emphasised that an imbalance of oxidative stressors and anti-oxidative mechanisms contributes to cardiac damage. He explained the role of oxidative and nitrosative stress with an example of anti-cancer drug doxorubicin, which is highly effective in anti-cancer therapy, but is also known to cause cardiac damage by generation of oxidative stress.

He said their lab was involved in studying the effectiveness of vitamin C to reduce doxorubicin induced heart failure.

Dr Rajbir Bhatti from pharmaceutical sciences coordinated the event and Dr MS Bhatti, HoD, introduced the speaker.
