Chandigarh, February 20
Eight market welfare associations in the city have come forward to run their respective parking lots free of cost. An equal number of associations have proposed to run these on no-profit, no-loss basis.
The market welfare associations of Sector 23-C, 20-C, 27-C Block 1, 27-C, 22-D, 46-C, 19-C and the NAC Market in Mani Majra have offered to run parking lots in their areas for free while the associations of Sector 11-D, 8-B, 44-D, 21-C, 19-D, 45-B, GPO building in Sector 17 and the computers’ market in Sector 20 expressed their interest in running these on no-profit, no-loss basis.
In a meeting with the MC Commissioner today, the Chandigarh Beopar Mandal (CBM) submitted the offer. The Municipal Corporation had invited expression of interest from the associations that were ready to run parking lots on their own.
CBM president Anil Vohra said, “We have submitted the lists of associations wishing to run the parking lots free of cost and on no-profit, no-loss basis.”
Charanjiv Singh, chairman of the traders’ body, said all associations had given their proposals and would wait for the response of the civic body.
Earlier, the MC had prepared a proposal to convert 30 free parking zones in different commercial areas of the city into paid facilities. The proposal was, however, turned down by the General House in November last year. The House had decided to allow market welfare associations concerned to run these.
