Create sections for all mediums, DEO directs principals

CHANDIGARH: The District Education Officer today directed all government school principals to make sure that students are not being discouraged by being taught in the language they don’t prefer.

The District Education Officer today directed all government school principals to make sure that students are not being discouraged by being taught in the language they don’t prefer.

The letter by the DEO reads: “You are requested to instruct your teachers that they are supposed to teach in the medium which is easy for students to comprehend and also tell them not to discourage the students. All schools are instructed to have sections for all language mediums.”

The directions came in the wake of a complaint by some parents against a teacher in Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 8, for allegedly forcing students to study in the Hindi medium.

According to the complaint, a Class XII sociology teacher had been coercing children to opt for sociology in Hindi as she was not affluent in English as the medium for teaching. Students who have already passed the subject in Class XI in the English medium were now being dictated in Hindi.

However, school Principal Ranjana Srivastav denied the allegations.

The UT Education Department offers teaching in all three languages – Punjabi, Hindi and English.
