Demanding implementation of a decision of the UT Administration that declared Sector 17 as a no-vending zone, traders of the market have decided to start an agitation from December 12.

Neeraj Bajaj, president of a joint action committee of Sector 17, said in the first phase, traders would keep their shops closed from 5.30 pm to 6.30 pm and hold a candle march later.

The decision to start the peaceful protest was taken during a meeting of the joint action committee, which was attended by more than 150 traders, recently.

Traders said they were forced to adopt the protest way to protect the Sector 17 market, which was now full of vendors.

Meanwhile, the Chandigarh Beopar Mandal, in a meeting held under its president Anil Vohra, unanimously decided to support the agitation to be organised by Sector 17 traders in association with the Business Promotion Council, the Progressive Traders Association and the Chandigarh Traders’ Association, Sector 17.

The CBM also decided that no vendors would be adjusted within or in front of shops in sector markets.

Vohra said they were not against the rehabilitation of vendors. The Municipal Corporation should identify a suitable place for these vendors, which should be away from markets.

The meeting was attended by CBM chairman Charanjiv Singh, patrons Satpal Gupta, Parshotam Mahajan, Diwakar Sahoonja, Gursharan Batra, and others office-bearers of the traders’ body.
