Cleanliness a distant dream in Karnal district

THE administration speaks high of cleanliness in Karnal city but the area of Shiv Puri Jundla Gate road ward no. 16 exposes the claim. It has not only become a dumping ground but also has a filthy water pond that is an open invitation to several deadly diseases. The work on the road too is running at snail's pace and is adding to the residents' woes. The area has been lying in this state for a long time and nobody is bothered to pay any heed to improve the situation. The administration needs to look into the issue immediately and do the needful. Des Raj Gupta, Karnal

Hike penalty for not wearing mask from Rs 500 to Rs 2,000

THE second wave of Covid-19 appears to be on the horizon and precautions such as wearing a face mask and maintaining social distancing are a must to be taken care of these days. Of late, people have become careless and need to know the seriousness of the situation and act responsibly. The state government is urged to enhance the penalty for not wearing face masks from Rs 500 to Rs 2,000 without any delay. Face mask is one of the effective measures to avoid contacting and spread of the infection. Ravi Bhushan, Kurukshetra

Jind sugar mill cries for attention

LOOKING at the bumper sugarcane crop each year in Jind district, the state government has been contemplating to increase the crushing capacity of the Jind sugar mill since long. Even after a lot of funds have been spent to achieve the goal, the situation is no better. Last year too, a lot of money was spent on maintenance process and this year, vital machines such as turbines and boilers etc got defective as soon as the process commenced at the mill and it had to be shut down for more than a week in the peak season. Farmers allege that no repair was done and gradually the mill became a junk and unfit even after a huge sum of money was spent on the name of repairs. Ramesh Gupta, Narwana

Make issuance of driving licence tougher

THE state transport/traffic departments must make the process of issuance of driving licence transparent and tougher to reduce road mishaps due to driver's fault. The issuance should be subject to strict driving test on tailor-made tracks and knowledge of driving rules and regulations. The ease of getting licence by unfair means makes a mockery of the system and leads to mishaps on roads leading to loss of precious lives. Ramit, Ritu Bagga, Panchkula
