Former Union Minister of State for Energy and three-time Lok Sabha MP from Kangra Vikram Mahajan (83) died at his residence in New Delhi last night after a brief illness. He hailed from Bhadwar, a small village near Nurpur.
As per information, the late MP was son of the third Chief Justice of India late Mehar Chand Mahajan and close to former Prime Minister late Indira Gandhi. He remained Lok Sabha MP for three terms from 1967-71, 1972-77 and 1980-84 and was Union Minister for Energy in the Indira Gandhi cabinet during 1980 to 84.
His contribution to the establishment of power projects in the state was immense. After retiring from active politics, he had started philanthropic activities in Kangra district. He had been running three free vocational training centres at different places in the district for girls of poor families, disbursing widow pensions and scholarships to poor meritorious students.
According to Vivek Mahajan, son of the late MP, he was cremated this afternoon in New Delhi.
