Shimla, October 31

The Himachal Pradesh Congress Committee (HPCC) today observed the death anniversary of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi as Farmers Rights Day.

Led by state Congress president Kuldeep Rathore, state Mahila Congress president Janeb Chandel and Shimla Urban president Jitendra Chaudhary, the Congress office-bearers and workers sat on a “fast for two hours” in front of India Gandhi’s statue on The Ridge.

“The Central Government is harming the interests of the small and medium scale farmers by passing the new laws,” said Rathore. He said that the laws that were enacted by the Congress after Independence to improve the condition of the farmers had been replaced by new agricultural laws which are against the interests of the farmers, who are protesting throughout the country.

Rathore paid respect to Indira and said whether it was the decision to nationalise banks or defeating Pakistan, it was all due to the decisiveness and her leadership.

He also paid tributes to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and said he was a freedom fighter and the first Home Minister of independent India.
