Governor Bandaru Dattatreya today visited the Roerich Art Gallery, founded by Russian painter Nicholas Roerich, at Naggar in Kullu district. He is on a two-day visit to Kullu and Lahaul-Spiti districts.

Indian curator Ramesh Chandra and Russian curator Larisa Surgina briefed the Governor about the works of Nicholas installed at the gallery.

Dattatreya visited all four museums in the art gallery and appreciated Nicholas for beautifully depicting cultural heritage in his each creation.

The Governor said Nicholas Roerich lived in Naggar for 26 years and during this period, he produced more than 7,000 paintings that were unique in itself.

“The art gallery depicts the cultures of the two countries. Not only this, Nicholas has made a great effort in cherishing the rich cultural heritage of Kullu, Chamba and Lahaul-Spiti districts. His works attract researchers,” he said.

The Governor exhorted every Indian to study the art of Roerich.

The Governor said the Roerich Art Gallery gave Naggar an international identity. The splendour of this gallery should be maintained and preserved so that the future generations continued to know about the Himalayan culture.

Later, the Governor visited the National Heritage Naggar Castle. He said Naggar had a unique history and this beautiful place indeed attracted lakhs of tourists every year. — TNS
