A migrant from Uttar Pradesh (UP) was duped of Rs 53,300 when his ATM card was swapped by a miscreant when the former was trying to withdraw money from an ATM at Parwanoo.

According to a complaint filed with the police last evening, Navase, who hails from Sambhal district of UP, while trying to withdraw cash from an ATM at Parwanoo on September 15, encountered some problem. Another youth present in the ATM room asked him to enter his PIN multiple times or else his card would be blocked.

Unaware about the intension of the miscreant, Navase did as was advised but failed to withdraw the cash following which he handed over the ATM card to the man who conveniently swapped it with another card and also tried to show that his card was not working. Navase failed to realise that his original ATM card had been swapped and he took the card from the youth. After several days when he checked his account, he found that Rs 53,300 had been withdrawn from it.

A case under Section 420 of the IPC had been registered and further probe was underway, said Solan SSP Madhusudan Sharma.

While such cases have become routine and the gullible youth are often duped through ATM swaps, reporting of such instances after passage of several weeks has made it difficult for the police to arrest the culprits.
