Srinagar, June 12

Two policemen and as many civilians were killed and at least three others injured when some militants fired upon security forces in Sopore town of Baramulla district, officials said.

The militants opened fire on a joint party of the CRPF and the police near Main Chowk, Sopore, around noon. Constables Waseem and Showkat succumbed to their injuries.

Sub-Inspector Mukesh Kumar and SPO Danish are undergoing treatment. The injured were rushed to a nearby hospital from where a policeman was taken to the Army’s 92 Base Hospital. The security forces have cordoned off the area. Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha said the cowardly act would not go unpunished. — PTI
