The play way-cum-activity calendar launched by the Education Department is appearing to be amusing for children in pre-primary schools. Teachers claimed that the new format is attracting more children to schools.

In the beginning of this month, the department had designed a new pattern for pre-primary classes. To accomplish the activities of “Khed Mahal”, a calendar maintaining activities based on various themes, was introduced by the officials.

A total of eight themes have been designed for the students, including four different activity corners for engaging the students in creative tasks. ‘Animals’, ‘clay modelling’, ‘Me, my family and my home’, ‘ Birds’, ‘Alphabets’, ‘Fruits and vegetables’, ‘Means of transportation’, ‘Our surroundings’, ‘Means of communication’ and ‘Dreams’, are the themes listed in the calendar.

Nishant Kumar, the leader of the “Sarkari School Sikhya Bachao Manch”, said government had added this new format under the “Padho Punjab Mission”. The students do not have to rely on traditional writing patterns to get basic education.

An educational kit containing 32 worksheets has been provided to all the government primary schools. The worksheets are to be completed in a year and are also a part of the creative development of students.

Gurjit Singh, a pre-primary teacher at Government School Ladowali, said, as per the guidelines issued by the District Education Officer, these new patters have been introduced to provide homely atmosphere to students so that they could continue their classes in school. In-addition, the calendar would serve as a daily session plan for students.

The department has drafted several activities like clay modelling, colour identifications, pottery making, that were to be conducted every day by teachers to keep the children engaged, added Gurjit.
