An undertrial escaped from police custody while being taken to judicial custody from a court complex on January 19.
Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Prem Chand, working at Naib Court in the Nakodar court complex, recorded his statement with the police stating that the suspect - Rannjit Singh, alias Saabi, a resident of Nangal Ambian village falling under the Shahkot police station - had surrendered in the court on January 19 in a case filed by Punjab Gramin Bank.
In his statement, the ASI said Judicial Magistrate (First Class) Dr Jubli had ordered that the suspect be sent to judicial custody till February 2.
The ASI said the suspect, who was arrested under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act, was in lock-up (Bakshi khana) in the judicial court complex. While he was being taken out, the suspect pushed him and ran away. He tried his best to catch him, but could not succeed.
Investigating officer Hans Raj said a case under Section 224 of the IPC had been registered against Saabi and a manhunt launched to arrest him.
