Q.I am doing BSc and have a lot of interest in Physics. How can I make a career in astrophysics? What are options later on for me? — Sargun Sihota

A. Congratulations. You belong to a large group of people who see galaxies and stars when they close their eyes. Astrophysics and the space technology offer some of the best career paths for physics, mathematics, engineering and computer science graduates who are seeking a professional career, whilst still maintaining contact with advanced scientific concepts. These careers give the opportunity to become intrinsically involved in some of the most exciting and ambitious projects ever conceived by mankind.

Usually, astrophysicists are of two types — Observational Astrophysicist have the task of studying the physical aspects of the universe and Theoretical Astrophysicists, on the other hand, use various mathematical models as well as computer simulations to study and explain various phenomena of astrophysics.

A bachelor’s degree followed by a MSc degree in physics/astrophysics is the minimum qualification required to set your foot in this vast arena. A PhD in astrophysics will take you to a higher feat. Punjabi University, Patiala offers a two-year course named MSc. (Physics) Astronomy and Space Physics. The Indian Institute of Astrophysics has an integrated MSc & PhD programme. Delhi University, Bangalore University, Calcutta University, Pune University, BITS Pilani, University of Mumbai, IISER's, etc. all offer you MSc Physics with Astrophysics as a subject.

As this profession will require deep knowledge of a very specific area, you should start studying research methodology on your own and start writing blogs and articles in the field of astrophysics.

Please keep in mind that becoming an astrophysicist requires years of observation, training, and work. But, the most important requisite is immense passion. This field is not for the folks who want a stable career in the mid-20s. Since a PhD is almost a must to have a career in astronomy and astrophysics, you might not earn lucrative salaries till the late-20s or early-30s.

Astrophysicists are hired by organisations involved in performing theoretical work, research or teaching in areas of astrophysics which includes Colleges and universities, Government agencies, Public and private research facilities, Science centres and planetariums.
