City lad shines in chess championship

LUDHIANA: Anuj Bansal of Ludhiana and Deepanshi Sharma from Patiala romped home champions in the boys’ and girls’ section, respectively, in the inaugural edition of the FIDE Rated Punjab State Chess Championship (U-19) which concluded at CT University here on Monday.

Anuj Bansal of Ludhiana and Deepanshi Sharma from Patiala romped home champions in the boys’ and girls’ section, respectively, in the inaugural edition of the FIDE Rated Punjab State Chess Championship (U-19) which concluded at CT University here on Monday.

A total of 97 players competed in the three-day championship, organised by the Ludhiana District Chess Association, to select players for the Junior National Chess Championship scheduled to be held from October 28 to November 6 in New Delhi.

In the boys’ section, Anuj secured seven out of eight points to emerge winner, while Anmol Bhagat of Jalandhar finished as the runner-up. Top seeded Bhuvesh Mahajan of Amritsar and local lad Yuvraj Singh with 6.5 points each had to content with the third and fourth positions, respectively.

In the girls’ section, Deepanshi Sharma proved her class to bag the top position. Tushita Chopra, Anahita Verma and Tiya Setia, all from Jalandhar, secured the second, third and fourth positions, respectively. The eight players also qualified for the national championship. — OC
