Sahnewal, July 26
The rail roko protest by Youth Congress leader was foiled by the Sahnewal police as protesters were stopped midway when they tried to reach the railway track.
The Youth Congress had planned a rail roko protest against the Enforcement Directorate’s summons to party president Sonia Gandhi in a money laundering case. The protesters started from Brothers Dhaba towards the railway line, but were stopped by the police midway. Many were taken into custody but were released after two hours.
Barinder Dhillon, president, Youth Congress, Punjab, who, along with district rural president Lucky Sandhu, led the protest said: “It is a clear cut indication of autocratic and dictatorial rule. The stifling of freedom of speech and expression cannot work in a democratic set up. The attack on the freedom of expression of the Opposition parties is taking place on a daily basis.”
General Secretary, Youth Congress, Punjab, Udayveer Dhillon, and Harman Virk, Secretary, All India Youth Congress, were present among the protesters to raise their voice against the alleged ‘injustice’ with the senior party leaders. “Sonia Gandhi, the most senior leader and that too a lady, is being questioned in such a shameless manner. We will continue to express our resentment till the government does not stop its tactics of harassing Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi. The protest shall now spread in all the villages, towns and cities,” the youth leaders asserted.
Sahnewal SHO Amandeep Singh Brar said the protesters were marching towards the railway track of Sahnewal but were stopped midway. “They were picked up from Sahnewal Chowk and not allowed to reach the protest site. They were detained as a preventive measure and released afterwards,” he said.
