Demanding the resignation of the Yogi Adityanath-led BJP government in Uttar Pradesh the district unit of the Punjab Istri Sabha organised a protest rally near the Punjabi Bhawan here today against the gang-rape and murder of a girl in Hathras and other such cases in UP.
Speakers while addressing the protesters said the law and order situation was the worst in UP. The government, instead of punishing criminals through legal course of action, was protecting them. It was unfortunate that the police had lost professionalism and had become an agent to carry out misdeeds of the Yogi government. Cremating the body of the deceased in the Hathras incident at 3 am in the absence of her parents was against law as well as Hindu traditions. It was a “blatant murder by the state government” which first admitted her to a small hospital and later shifted to Aligarh. When they found that her condition was deteriorated, she was shifted to Safdarjung Hospital, Delhi. During the 14-day period, the police were not able to carry her medical examination to ascertain rape. It was done intentionally, they said.
They demanded a judicial probe into the incident and free access to the family by civil society activists. The speakers expressed skepticism over the silence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on such a heinous crime and the role of the state government.
Dr Gurcharan Kaur Kochar, president, Punjab Istri Sabha; Jit Kumari, general secretary, advocate Avtar Kaur, Barjinder Kaur, Kulwant Kaur, Kusum Lata, Veena Sachdeva, advocate Rupila Mohini, Sarabjit Kaur, Shakuntla, Amarjeet Kaur and Veena Rani were among those who addressed the rally.
