A large number of migrant workers, along with their kids, were forced to wait for their buses in the scorching heat outside Green Land School, near Jalandhar Bypass, today to reach Guru Nanak Stadium where medical screening is done before shifting them to the railway station.
Similar scenes were witnessed at various locations where the migrants, who want to return to their native states, gathered to board buses to reach Guru Nanak Stadium. They could be seen waiting for hours in absence of necessary arrangements to protect them from the scorching heat. Besides, social distancing was also not ensured at most of such locations.
The organisations working for the welfare of migrants have sought from the government to make necessary arrangements to protect them from direct heat and don’t make them stand in direct sunlight for hours during these hot summer days.
They demand that tents and fans be installed for migrants at all locations from where they board buses to reach Guru Nanak Stadium for the medical screening.
RK Yadav of the Yadav Ahir Mahasabha said: “The migrants had started gathering near Dhandari flyover at around 11 am while their train was to depart from Ludhiana at 7 pm. They were forced to stand for hours before boarding the buses to reach Guru Nanak Stadium for medical screening. The administration should set up tents and make arrangement for water for the migrants who come at various locations to board buses. The time management should be ensured to avoid any inconvenience to the migrants. The authorities should also ensure social distancing at these places too.”
