The longstanding issue of traffic congestion on an old bridge over the Buddha Nullah, connecting Tajpur Road and Tibba Road, is expected to be resolved with the provision of a dual carriageway. The municipal corporation (MC) has initiated the tendering process to widen the current way by constructing a new bridge along the existing one in the vicinity of Amrit Dharma Kanda and Mata Karam Kaur Colony.

Residents have persistently advocated for the expansion of the old bridge due to the recurring issue of substantial traffic jams, particularly during the evening hours. The old bridge has become a bottleneck, and the urgency to address the concern has prompted the corporation to allocate approximately Rs 3.85 crore to construct another bridge. Technical bids for the project are scheduled to be unveiled on February 6.

Gurinder Singh of nearby Mata Karam Kaur Colony highlighted the long-pending plea for widening the existing bridge way, emphasising the prevalent traffic congestion as a significant challenge. Daily occurrences of extensive traffic jams on the old bridge had compounded the issue, sometimes making it difficult for vehicles to pass through it. In addition to the construction of the new bridge, he also urged the MC to undertake repairs on the deteriorated safety walls of the old bridge. Also, there is a need to reinforce the banks of the nullah.

Another resident said the connection between a number of areas on Tajpur Road and Tibba Road relies heavily on the existing old bridge and construction of another bridge was expected to bring substantial relief to commuters and residents in surrounding areas. The enhancement of the bridge was not only seen as a solution to alleviate traffic congestion but also considered crucial for ensuring the safety of commuters.

An official from the corporation said plans were underway to construct a new bridge alongside the existing one, creating a dual carriageway to address traffic-related concerns effectively. The decision was based on a survey conducted by the GNDEC in the past, wherein the recommendation was made to construct a new bridge running parallel to the old bridge. Parveen Singla, Superintending Engineer of the Municipal Corporation, said the tenders had been floated to construct a new bridge along the old one.

Three more bridges to be built at different locations

The MC has also initiated the tendering process for constructing three bridges over the Buddha Nullah, strategically located near Radha Swami Satsang Ghar, Mahavir Dyeing Industries and Manjit Nagar. The projected cost for these is estimated to be around Rs 4.55 crore. On the completion of the tendering phase for both projects, the construction is slated to be concluded within 12 months.
