Nat’l conference on chemical, environmental sciences ends

The 12th National Conference on Chemical and Environmental Sciences: Advanced Innovations-2020, organised by the Department of Chemistry, Punjabi University, concluded here today.

While delivering the valedictory speech, SS Marwaha, Chairman, Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB), apprised the gathering of steps taken by the board to stop stubble burning.

The conference was inaugurated by Prof Tankeshwar Kumar, Vice-Chancellor, Guru Jambeshwar University of Science and Techonology, Hisar.

Prof Tankeshwar Kumar said, “Research, which becomes beneficial for humanity is the research in real sense.” Warning against plastic pollution he said, “Single-use plastic has become one of the most pressing environmental issue.”

While discussing various aspects of plastic recycling in the country and elsewhere, he added, “A scientist must have social commitment.”

Prof BS Ghuman said, “India’s natural resources are depleting day by day.” Focusing on direct relation between science and society he said, “Development at the cost of our environment is not justified. A sustainable development model should be adopted on priority basis.” He suggested conveying outcomes from the conference to governments so that recommendations become part of policy-making decisions.
