We do not know about the rest of the world, but Punjabi singers sure love to jam on folk music. And the end result is various renditions of Punjabi folk, which becomes a new wedding number every other season. Bringing in the classic folk flavor, served on the colourful platter of pop, is the song Bajre Da Sitta which pairs singers, Deep Kalsi and Rashmeet Kaur, for the second time. Released on January 14, it also has verses by rapper Ikka.

Deep Kalsi

Rashmeet Kaur says, “Being a Punjabi, when you have knowledge of Punjabi folk, why not use it? For ‘Ik Meri’ too, Deep and I put in our best.”

Addressing the views and copyrights issues, Deep says, “Views don’t matter. An artiste is more about creating and making it relatable for the audience. The reach of the song can vary and has many factors to contribute to it. And this answers the copyrights thing as well - there can be as many covers and renditions of any original number.

Rashmeet adds, “Similarly, when we take Bajre Da Sitta, a classic Punjabi folk ceremonial song, whose popularity dates back to the 1940’s, we do not call it an original but a rendition. We put our own lyrics. It was an incredibly good experience putting such a number together.”

Familial feel

Shot in Delhi and Gurugram in October, the song also has stand-up comedian, Atul Khatri, who has featured in a music video for the very first time. Deep adds, “It was Sony’s idea to bring a familial feel to the song, so we introduced Atulji as Rashmeet’s father. Also, credit goes to director Grim, for conceptualising the whole song so well.”

Are there often creative differences when multiple artistes join hands for a project? Deep replies, “I think that happens when you do not listen to the other person. Thankfully, Rashmeet and I get along well.”
