Cops to again look into ‘terror’ angle in Balwinder’s murder

Even as a police team would be dispatched to Delhi for bringing two gangsters — Sukhdeep Singh Bura and Gurjit Singh Bhaa — on production warrant from the Delhi Police, the Punjab Police are “reconsidering” the terrorist angle behind the killing of Shaurya Chakra awardee comrade Balwinder Singh.

Comrade Balwinder was shot by two persons at his residence-cum-school on October 16. Bura and Bhaa, who were arrested by a special cell of the Delhi Police along with three Kashmiri residents, had claimed that they had shot him dead.

Earlier, the police had claimed that the incident was an outcome of the personal enmity of his son and that he was killed by the gangsters.

Comrade Balwinder along with his wife Jagdish Kaur, brother Ranjit Singh and his wife Balraj Kaur were awarded the Shaurya Chakra for bravely fighting terrorism during militancy in Punjab. The family of the slain leader, especially his wife, had been calling the murder a handiwork of the militants. The police had claimed that the family’s personal enmity, especially of Arashdeep Singh, with the gangsters was the cause of the murder.

“We have not ruled out the radical angle in the murder of comrade Balwinder. Bura and Bhaa, who gunned down Balwinder, were not aware about the reason behind his killing,” said Tarn Taran SSP Dhruman Nimbale.

Bura and Bhaa were arrested by the special cell of the Delhi Police, while prime suspect Sukhmeet Pal Singh Bhikhariwal was arrested in Dubai.

Nimbale said: “We must corroborate the findings of the Delhi Police with our investigations before reaching any conclusion. The facts will be cleared with the interrogation of Bura and Bhaa in the presence of Bhikhariwal. We have also written to the DGP to bring Bhikhariwal from Dubai.”

Eleven suspects, including Sukhraj Singh Sukha and Ravinder Singh Gyann, who had hatched the conspiracy to kill Balwinder at the behest of Bhikhariwal, had been arrested. Nimbale said Bura and Bhaa were asked to execute the task.
