Chandigarh, November 29
The construction work of the Goindwal Sahib Central Jail is almost complete and the jail is expected to be operational in December, said Deputy Chief Minister Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, while convening a high-level meeting to review the matters pertaining to the Jails Department.
Randhawa, who also holds the charge of the jail ment, said to rationalise the capacity of the state jails, the Rs 185-crore Central Jail, with a capacity of 2,780 inmates, had been constructed in Goindwal Sahib. This will be the 26th jail in Punjab, including the 10 central jails and 15 state jails.
The Deputy Chief Minister said at present, the prisoners of Mohali and Fatehgarh Sahib districts had to be shifted to Ropar and Patiala jails due to which a new jail was being proposed in Mohali and the Rural and Panchayat Department had been asked to identify the land for the jail. One officer from each of these departments had been deputed for coordination, he added. — TNS
