London, August 27

An NRI, serving a jail term in the UK for the 2009 murder of his wife, will be deported to India to serve the remainder of his sentence in Punjab.

Harpreet Aulakh was sentenced to a minimum of 28 years in London in December 2010 for ordering the murder of his wife, Geeta Aulakh (28), after she sought divorce. The 40-year-old will be deported under the India-UK Repatriation of Prisoners Act, the BBC reported on Monday.

“All arrangements are in place. According to the plan, the UK authorities will bring him to New Delhi, from where a team of the Punjab Police will bring him to Amritsar,” IPS Sahota, a top prison officer in Punjab, was quoted as saying.

IG (Prisons) Roop Kumar said Harpreet had told the UK authorities that he wanted to serve his remaining term in India. In November 2009, Geeta was hacked to death with a sword.

The attack had taken place when Geeta went to pick up her sons after leaving a community radio station where she worked as a receptionist. Harpreet, also known as Sunny, Sher Singh (19) and Jaswant Dhillon (30) were found guilty of Geeta’s murder in 2010. Sher Singh, who wielded the sword, and Dhillon, who acted as the lookout, were sentenced to 22 years behind bars. — PTI
