Sangrur residents protest Punjab Agro move to open fuel station

Angered at the proposal of Punjab Agro Industries Corporation Limited to allow axing of trees at its Sangrur office, area residents today had heated exchanges with senior officers. The residents alleged the authorities got their signatures on the pretext of constructing a park at its office, but later learnt the authorities wanted to open a petrol station.

As two filling stations already exist on the Gaushala-Mehla road, area residents claim there is no need for a third one. They allege since their houses are located at the rear end of the office, the station will pose a threat to their lives.

“Some officers took our signatures on the pretext of building a park here, but now they want to have a petrol station here. Today, they auctioned old trees on the land and these will be axed soon. We will not let this happen,” said Happy, an area resident.

Learning about the auction, some locals tried to enter the office but were allegedly prevented from doing so. Sources said the Agro authorities had auctioned 13 trees and called interested parties to its office on Monday. Sangrur Agro district manager Balwinder Pal Singh he said the land belonged to the department and they had completed the process of opening a filling station. — TNS
