PATIALA: Balwant Singh Rajoana, who is on death row in former Chief Minister Beant Singh’s assassination case, on Tuesday expressed concern over the Referendum 2020 campaign spearheaded by the US-based Sikhs for Justice (SFJ). He was brought to Government Rajindra Hospital for a medical check-up. He claimed that they (SFJ) were only misleading the people. Rajoana said: “I am against Referendum 2020. These people do not want to make a separate nation, but are trying to divide the Khalsa panth and collecting funds. They have been betraying Sikhs for over 34 years.” TNS

Cheema calls for 5-day Vidhan Sabha session

Chandigarh: Leader of Opposition in Vidhan Sabha Harpal Singh Cheema on Tuesday requested the state government for at least a five-day Vidhan Sabha session with one day each for serious discussions on issues like desecration of Guru Granth Sahib and police firing at Behbal Kalan and Kotkapura, drugs, unemployment, pollution of rivers and other water resources and debt of farmers/farm labourers. He said amicable solutions could be drawn only after exploring  on the floor of the House opinion of all parties.  Cheema, in a press release issued here on Tuesday, also demanded that one more day should be earmarked especially to discuss important pending issues like river water, state capital and Punjabi speaking areas which have been creating controversies. Fulfil promises, CPI tells Capt

Moga: Punjab is passing through the worst economic and agriculture crisis in the recent times leading to social unrest among a large section of society. This was stated by senior CPI leader Dr Joginder Dayal while addressing a protest of farm labourers under the banner of Punjab Khet Mazdoor Sabha at Baghapurana on Tuesday. He reminded CM Capt Amarinder Singh of the promises he made with the electorate. His demanded included waiving all loans of farm labourers and sanctioning grants of Rs 10 lakh as compensation to the kin of suicide victims. TNS

Two booked for immigration fraud

Kharar: The Kharar Sadar police have registered a case of fraud against Kunal Kapoor and Pradeep, owners of an immigration firm in Desu Majra. They allegedly cheated people on the pretext of arranging visas for them. Sukhwinder Singh of Kaithal told the police that after reading an advertisement in a newspaper, they came in contact with the accused and paid them Rs 1.80 lakh each. They were given fake tickets and visas, about which they came to know when they reached the Delhi airport. OC

Four arrested with habit-forming tablets 

Sangrur: The Crime Investigations Agency (CIA), Sangrur, arrested four  persons on Monday night and confiscated 15,000 habit-forming tablets  and Rs 1 lakh from their possession. “Our CIA team arrested Mankirat Singh, Gurpreet singh,  Amrik Singh and  Vijay Kumar  from near Bahadurpur drain on Monday night  and seized 15,000 tablets from their  car.  The CIA has also seized Rs 1 lakh and  is conducting further investigation,” said Dr Sandeep Garg, SSP, Sangrur. Woman held with 5-kg poppy husk

Fazilka: The Fazilka police have nabbed a woman drug peddler with 5 kg of poppy husk. Investigation officer Harbans Lal said the police patrolling party on suspicion nabbed Jogindro Bai of Nawan Salemshah village. On his search, the police found 5 kg of poppy husk from a carry bag. It is suspected that the poppy husk has been smuggled from Rajasthan. She has been booked under the Narcotic Drugs and other Psychotropic Substances Act by the Sadar police in Fazilka. OC
