A youth of Ballo village in Bathinda was killed in the firing of rubber bullets by the Haryana Police at the Khanauri border today. The deceased, Shubhkaran Singh, was the only brother of two sisters.

As soon as the news of the death of the young man spread, villagers of Ballo and other surrounding villages mourned the tragedy. While a large number of people reached the house of the deceased farmer, the family of the victim and some villagers reached Government Rajindra Hospital in Patiala, where the body was kept.

It is being said that when some young people were protesting against the restrictions imposed by the police at the Khanauri border, the Haryana Police fired tear gas shells and rubber bullets, one of which hit the young man behind the ear. He was taken to the hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead.

Gurvinder Singh Ballo of the BKU (Malwa) said the young man had left for Delhi three days ago, but the Haryana Police stopped them at Khanauri border. He said cops fired rubber bullets, one of which hit Shubkaran.

The villagers said the deceased owned only two and a half acres and demanded a compensation of Rs 1 crore and a government job for his sister.
