The cyber crime branch of the police has issued an advisory alerting customers against nefarious designs of hackers and asked them not to fall prey to their fraudulent activities.
Hackers are inventing new methods to fool and fleece bank customers. The latest technique being used by them is to open a fixed deposit (FD) account to access a one-time password (OTP) for transferring money.
ASP, cyber crime, Narvir Singh Rathore said after getting the bank details of customers such as account number, Internet logging details and debit and credit card details, criminals open FD account in their name and transfer funds in that account as no OTP was required for transferring money in self account.
Later, posing as bank officials, they call customers and tell them that some of their money had been transferred to FD and ask for OTP for refunding the same. In distress, customers share the OTP number, following which fraudsters transfer funds to their accounts. Recently, two such cases had been reported from Kullu and Solan, he added.
