Amritsar, June 27

The Farm Advisory Service Centre (FASC) organised a training camp on weed management in paddy at Bugga village in Tarn Taran on Thursday.

The aim of the training camp was to make farmers aware about weeds and their management in paddy.

About 50 farmers participated in the camp. The farmers were informed about the importance of weed control. “Weed control is important to prevent losses in yield and production costs., and to preserve good grain quality,” said Dr Parminder Kaur.

She asked the farmers to take the advisory of FASC experts before going for any type of agricultural operations. She started technical session by delivering lecture on insect and disease management in paddy. She also requested farmers to adopt the new technologies invented by PAU. She said that the yield can be simply improved by cultivating recommended varieties of PAU which are resistant to insect pests and diseases.

Dr Tarundeep Kaur, assistant professor of agronomy, advised for adopting agronomic practices for weed management. She emphasised the use of recommended doses of weedicides to avoid residue effect in paddy seed.

The scientists also stressed that control of weeds during land preparation is crucial to reduce the amount of weed pressure in the field. —TNS
