City surgeon gets int’l fellowship

AMRITSAR: An oral and maxillofacial surgeon and associate professor of Sri Guru Ram Das Dental Institute, Dr Amit Dhawan, has brought laurels to the city by getting a coveted international fellowship at Hannover Medical Hospital, Germany.

An oral and maxillofacial surgeon and associate professor of Sri Guru Ram Das Dental Institute, Dr Amit Dhawan, has brought laurels to the city by getting a coveted international fellowship at Hannover Medical Hospital, Germany.

The fellowship was awarded to him by Facial Trauma Organisation, Switzerland. Dr Dhawan attended a six-week extensive advanced training in treating head and neck cancer, dental implants, facial trauma surgery and cosmetic jaw surgery under oral and maxillofacial surgeon Dr NC Gellrich in Switzerland.

Dr Dhawan said he would be able to treat patients of oral cancer more effectively. The incidence of oral cancer is on the rise in Punjab because of overuse of tobacco products and alcohol addiction, he said.

“Due to poor screening facilities and negligence by patients, oral cancer patients come to doctors at an advanced stage, which makes the disease difficult to treat,” he added.

He said due to an increase in number of road accidents, maxillofacial surgeons encountered disfiguring injuries to face, which was a challenge to treat. “This advanced training will provide means to treat patients effectively and even rehabilitate them with advanced dental implants,” he said. — TNS
