With the start of the academic season in private schools, the District Education Officer (DEO) has instructed private, unaided and aided schools to charge fee and other funds as per the rules of the government. The DEO stated the private schools can’t sell books, uniforms and school bags on the school premises.

Amardeep Singh Saini, DEO, said, “As per the directions of the government, the private schools can’t collect readmission fee and other annual funds. The schools have been warned to not charge any fee or fund by violating the rules. The fee-monitoring committee would be constituted very soon. The parents can file a complaint if any school violates the government rules”.

According to the directions, the schools have to display the list of books prescribed for students on the notice board. The schools affiliated with the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) cannot prescribe books by private publishers. They have to provide books to students published by the National Council for Educational Research Training (NCERT).

“The schools can’t sell books, uniforms or school bags to the students from a book shop inside the school. If any of the schools sells the books on the school premises, the parents can complain against the school management. We will write to the department for appropriate action”, said the DEO.

A large number of parents associated with parents’ associations had staged protests against private schools last year. The government had assured them to constitute a fee regulatory body, which would keep a check on the private schools. A large number of private schools have been collecting readmission fee and several annual funds by violating the rules.
