Four persons take away taxi at gunpoint

Four persons took away a taxi at gunpoint near the Tangra railway crossing here yesterday.

They hired the taxi from Jalandhar to go to Amritsar for attending a marriage function at Muchhal village near Tangra.

Preetam Chand, the driver of the taxi, who originally hailed from Kangra in Himachal Pradesh, told the police that he worked as a driver with the Vicky Taxi stand.

Preetam said, “I drive an Innova car, (PB-10-CK-9477), owned by Ajit Singh of Jalandhar. Yesterday around 3 am, four shorn hair persons came to the taxi stand and one of the accused introduced himself as Tarspal Singh of Yodhe village.”

“They said they wanted to hire a taxi to go to Muchhal village near Tangra on the Amritsar-Jalandhar road for attending a marriage function. Their agreed to pay Rs 2,100 as the taxi fare. They were asked to provide their identity proof, but the accused gave their cellphone number,” he added.

Preetam told the police that one of them sat beside the driver while remaining three sat behind.

He said around 6 am, the youth sitting beside the driver took out a pistol and put it on his head. The accused asked him to go out of the taxi and later, sped away with the taxi, Preetam told the police.

The Amritsar rural police have registered a case under Sections 379-B (2) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and 25, 54, 59 of the Arms Act against Tarspal Singh and three unidentified youths.

Police officer Tasem Singh, who is investigating the case, said investigations were under progress to identify the culprits.
