Amritsar, October 22

Two persons have been booked on the charge of abetment to suicide after a girl ended her life due to breaking up of her engagement.  The suspects have been identified as Nickjeet Singh, a resident of Chetanpura, and Gurpreet Singh, a resident of Cheecha.

The victim’s father told the police that his daughter was engaged to Gurpreet Singh and the marriage was scheduled to be held on October 15. Nickjeet Singh, a granthi at a gurdwara in Sangatpura, met Gurpreet some days before the marriage and raised doubts on the character of the girl. As a result, Gurpreet declined to marry the girl. On October 17, the girl committed suicide by consuming some poisonous substance. The victim’s father alleged that his daughter had committed suicide because she was upset after her engagement was broken.

On his complaint, the police have registered a case against the duo under Sections 306-A and 34 of the IPC.
