Bathinda, October 17

Members of the EGS-AIE-STR Teachers’ Union on Thursday staged a protest in front of the district education office over transfer of teachers and low salaries.

The protesters raised slogans against the Education Department and warned if their transfers were made on ‘irrational’ basis to far-flung areas, they would intensify their protest.

They raised slogans against the state government for not regularising the services of teachers who were working voluntarily under the Alternative Inclusive Education (AIE) and Education Guarantee Scheme (EGS).

President of the union, Veerpal Kaur, said, “We vehemently oppose the decision of transfers by the Education Department recently. Teachers are not only paid meagre salaries of Rs 2,500 and Rs 5,000, but also asked to work in far-flung areas of the district. It is difficult for them to work at locations that are 40 to 45 km from their houses. The decision of transfers is taken by the department to harass us.”
