Bathinda, December 30

Members of the Sewerage Board Union have been staging a protest for the past five days over their demand of regularisation of 48 sewer men.

The sewer workers today staged a protest outside the main disposal located near the ITI chowk in the city. The protesters raised slogans against the state government for not fulfilling their long-pending demand.

However, disposals which were closed by protesters were open today on the assurance of officials so that city residents do not face any problem.

Meanwhile, MLA Sarup Chand Singla called a meeting this evening at MCB office in this regard. But the meeting failed to bring any desired results. A meeting has been called again on Monday to resolve the issue.

Sewerage Board Union president Nemchand said 48 temporary workers were working for the past 12 years, but the government was not regularising their services. On many occasions, they have raised the issue with local bodies and sewerage board officials, but to no avail.

He said in the state, services of around 25,000 temporary workers had been regularised by the state government. But these 48 sewer men, who were working for the past 12 years, were not regularised.

He threatened that if their demands were not fulfilled in the days to come, then they would intensify their stir and the state government and the local administration would be responsible for the same.
