Vipul Atray, joint secretary of the PU Campus Students’ Council (PUCSC), on Tuesday protested against the publication of ‘Aaghaz’ certificates in Punjabi language by signing them in Hindi.

‘Aaghaz’ is an annual event of PUCSC where a number of competitions are held. For the first time, the certificates were published in Punjabi on one side and English on the other, while earlier only English was preferred.

Atray, who is from the National Students Union of India (NSUI), protested why only Punjabi was being preferred. “I told PUCSC president Kanupriya that let the students decide in which language they want their certificates. Why do we prefer one language over the other,” he said.

He said, “I did not want to create any hurdle in the conduct of the function. I do not have any problem with Punjabi. The certificates should be in Hindi too. Some students felt neglected. So, I signed the certificates in Hindi in protest.”

Kanupriya said, “We want to have Punjabi as official language of PU. That’s why we got the certificates published in Punjabi on one side.”

Kanupriya is pressing for setting up of a Punjabi directorate, carrying out all administrative activities in the university, including office work, correspondence, providing information, university calendar and handbook of information, in Punjabi.
