Chandigarh,  March  22

Traffic on Jan Marg from Matka Chowk to the Sector 16/17 light point will remain suspended for around three months due to the construction work of the second phase of a pedestrian underpass between Sector 17 and Rose Garden from  April 1.

Sources said the Department of Engineering had received a  request from  the contractor to close  the road  from April 1.

The work is being undertaken in two phases. While the foundation of the underpass is being laid on both sides of the road, the work on excavating the main carriageway in the second phase is yet to start.

The traffic on both sides of the road will be closed for carrying out the work on the second phase. The underpass is being constructed under the Smart City project near the RBI office at an approximate cost of Rs 8 crore.

VP Singh Badnore, Punjab Governor and UT Administrator, laid the foundation stone of the underpass in June last year.

Mukesh Anand, Special Secretary, Engineering Department, said the  road  would be closed to expedite the work. The new underpass would allow visitors to go directly to Rose Garden without crossing Jan Marg, one of the busiest roads in the city.
