CHANDIGARH: Two youths, who were allegedly in an inebriated condition, thrashed UT cops and misbehaved with a woman cop after the police questioned them over drinking at a public place in Sector 36 last evening.

Two youths, who were allegedly in an inebriated condition, thrashed UT cops and misbehaved with a woman cop after the police questioned them over drinking at a public place in Sector 36 last evening.

According to the police, the complainant, head constable Krishan Kumar, posted at the Sector 36 police station, along with other cops, was patrolling the market to check drinking at public places.

The police found the two suspects, Sumit (28), a resident of Sector 36, and Gagandeep Singh (27), a resident of Sector 44, taking liquor near a liquor store in the market.

The police questioned them following which they started misbehaving with the cops.

The duo then started quarrelling with the police. “The suspects tore the head constable’s uniform and also hit another cop,” the police said.

One of the cops called up the Police Control Room following which a PCR team reached the spot.

The suspects also quarrelled with the PCR staff and misbehaved with a woman cop, leading to high drama.

Both suspects were arrested and a case registered against them under Sections 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to deter a public servant from his duty), 353 (assault or criminal force to deter a public servant from discharge of his duty), 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 295-A (deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage reli­gious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or reli­gious beliefs) and 510 of the IPC and under Section 68-1 (B) of the Punjab Police Act 2007. The duo was produced before a court and sent to judicial custody.
