PU should put in efforts to avoid shutting of coffee house

It’s really sad to know that the Indian Coffee House running since decades on the Panjab University campus is planning to shut its operations.

It’s really sad to know that the Indian Coffee House running since decades on the Panjab University campus is planning to shut its operations. PU authorities must put in efforts to avoid shutting the ICH even if they have to reduce the fee being charged from the ICH management or to give a nominal increase in the rates of various eatables being charged by the restaurant from students. Students will never mind paying slightly more for their favourite snacks and coffee. These two steps will certainly make the operations of the ICH more viable commercially and no business house will shut its operations if it is making considerable profits which they need at least for covering their costs.

Blocked slip roads

It has been observed that at the roundabouts slip roads for turning towards the left side are often found blocked by vehicles halted due to red light. With the one cannot use it till the light turns green. The traffic police or the department concerned should identify such busy roundabouts in the tricity and corrective action should be taken for smooth traffic.

Property records not digitised properly

As per a news item, property tax record in the MCC is reported to be missing and a vigilance inquiry has been initiated. The tax was imposed in 2013 and the residents deposited tax in cash or through cheques at MCC window, samparks, banks and the same had gone into the revenue record of the MCC. The MC Commissioner in the past had assured that the property tax records had been digitised by collecting data from different sources and notices would be issued to the defaulters accordingly. From the vigilance inquiry, it appears that the outsourced agency has not updated/digitised the record properly so far .The residents are unnecessarily being harassed to produce receipts. In Chandigarh, residential properties are mostly in the name of senior citizens/retirees and have exchanged many hands, so it is difficult for this category of residents to preserve the receipts properly. The MC Commissioner/Assistant Commissioner should reconsider the issue to avoid unnecessary harassment to the residents, especially the senior citizens, who are already loaded with taxes.
