Chandigarh, November 19

Residents have no respite from the soaring prices of vegetables. While the prices of onion are at this year’s high, other vegetables have also gone beyond the reach of the common man. Within a week of temporarily showing a downward trend, the prices of vegetables and fruits have increased by 30 to 40 per cent.

Bitter gourd, which was available for Rs 40 a kg sometime back, was available for Rs 60 per kg today. The rates of bottle gourd are between Rs 40 and Rs 50 per kg against Rs 30 per kg last week. The rates of peas have increased from Rs 50 to Rs 60 per kg.

Carrot, which is usually cheap during the winter, is available for Rs 40 to Rs 50 per kg. Lady’s finger is available between Rs 50 to Rs 60 a kg. A vendor said there was a shortage of vegetables in the market due to which the rates had increased. He said tomato,  which was available for Rs 40 per a kg a week ago, was now selling between Rs 50 to Rs 60 a kg, depending upon the quality. The price of onion was Rs 45 today. It was available for Rs 35 to Rs 40 per kg last week. — TNS
