Why hasty decision

With reference to the news item, “One-day parking bonanza ends in Chandigarh” (Chandigarh Tribune, July 12), it was highly intriguing to learn that city residents will have to once again pay hiked parking rates. But then their nightmare can reasonably be attributed to the inability of the city MC to visualise the would-be emerging situation before going ahead with its decision to cancel the contract of the parking firm on July 9, owing to the firm’s failure to deposit the licence fee. No wonder that the parking firm, Arya Toll Infra Limited, successfully managed to outsmart the civic body despite being caught on the wrong foot. One may ask as to why the parking firm was allowed to double the parking rates? Who facilitated such a massive hike? What could have prompted the F&CC of the MC to revert to the parking charges prevalent before March 31, just a day after the licence of the firm was cancelled? Doesn’t such a hasty move sound strange?

Check mounting property tax dues  

The city MC has issued notices to institutions for failing to deposit property tax. It is the moral duty of the defaulters to regularly deposit property tax. However, the MC authorities are at fault for not doing their bit. Why they allowed accumulation of pending dues to such limits? Why strict action  was not initiated earlier? A time-bound policy is required to tackle mounting arrears.

Shun polythene 

The waste management project for Patiala has been hanging fire for long. I think we should not rely on the government for such initiatives. People too can help protect the environment by shunning the use of polythene bags. Why are we waiting for government action. Lack of awareness among people is a big issue. We should stop using polythene bags, and that too without government intervention.

Stray dog menace

Phase IX, Mohali, has become a haven for stray dogs. Stray dogs roam freely in residential areas. This leads not only to road accidents but also trouble the elderly and children. Recently, an elderly was injured due to them. Despite complaints, the MC too has failed to act against the menace.
