Chandigarh, December 19

The thefts reported at 16 shops in Sector 32 and Mani Majra in the wee hours of December 17 were allegedly committed by the same gang.

The Senior Superintendent of Police, Sukhchain Singh Gill, said the investigations had revealed that same gang targeted three shops in Sector 32 before moving to Mani Majra between 2.30 am and 5.30 am that day.

They were travelling in a silver Honda City, they had stolen from Sector 18, Panchkula, a few days back, said the SSP.

The police suspect it the handiwork of small-time criminals, as they had failed to break the locks of a jewellery shop in Mani Majra.

“It seems the thieves are new to the crime scene and belong to the city,” sources said.

Besides Sector 32, thefts were committed at shops at Mori Gate, Gobindpura and Motor Market.

A security guard at the Sector 32 market had informed the police about a car without any registration plate being spotted in the wee hours.

The police have launched a hunt for the car used in the crime. Sources said the city’s periphery and colonies are being searched.

“All the police stations have been informed to search for the car,” sources added.

The police said they are working on some leads from the footage procured from CCTV cameras installed in the shops.
