Chief Minister Harish Rawat today stressed on strengthening girl education in the state.

The Chief Minister while addressing the annual function of Government Girls’ College, Haldwani, said his government would make all efforts to strengthen girl education in the state. He announced that the girl college at Haldwani would now be known as Indira Priyadarshini College of Commerce. The college would be linked with vocational programmes and girls after completing their studies could use these skills for their financial empowerment.

Harish Rawat ordered Higher Education Director BC Mailkani and principal of the college GS Bisht to prepare a curriculum for vocational education and introduce it from the next academic session.

He told the gathering that the state government was working towards providing quality education in the state. He said NGOs and education experts would also have to support government efforts.

He also spoke about the support of the state government at all levels of education—primary, college, university, polytechnic and ITI. In her address, Finance Minister Indira Hirdayesh said the government had taken a pledge to develop the state as an educational hub. “A budget of Rs 178.56 crore has been allocated for higher education in the Budget for the next financial year,” she added.

Labour Minister Harish Chandra Durgapal, president, disaster management, Prayag Bhatt, member of the Slums Committee Khajan Pandey, president of the Mandi Samiti, Haldwani, Sumit Hridayesh, former MLA Narayan Pal and a large number of students were present on the occasion.
