The government has become an agent of builders and is making hundreds of people homeless to help in their projects. This was stated by state Congress president Ashok Tanwar, who was in the city today to meet 250 families that were rendered homeless following a demolition drive in the Sector 47 area yesterday.

HUDA officials and 500 policemen yesterday cleared 207 permanent residential structures and 200 temporary slum units in the land where a 3.65-acre plot was earmarked for a hospital. The police and the authorities claimed it to be a major achievement. The drive was spearheaded by Om Prakash, estate officer-1 who was also the duty magistrate. He said in 2011, a similar drive had squatters violent and they had set an official vehicle on fire.

“These people were removed just to create a road for a builder’s project. The government did not realise that these people have been living here for years and they should have made some alternative arrangements for them. This government is anti-poor,” said Tanwar.

He met the aggrieved families and promised to fight for their rights.
